It is a common occurrence in our day and society that yearly celebrations are being held. Sometimes, one does not really understand why these celebrations have to hold but still, we take part in it. Sometimes, we might feel like the reason why these activities are celebrated yearly is not substantial enough for the hype around it.
At other times, we teach ourselves to sneak away into our private and quiet world.
This pulls me down memory lane when I was a kid. I noticed that there was a point in time every year where we ate "special" chicken. Now, the most heartbreaking part of it was that those fowls being killed were always reared by me so I found it hard to eat them. I can still remember the small me trying to convince my mom not to cook my beloved fowls (Lol). As I grew older, I got to know that it was a yearly celebration being held that warranted the death of my fowls. I got angry and I vowed never to be a part of this celebration when I grew older. Unfortunately, my grandmother got to know about my secret vow and then, she called me into her room on that fateful night. She coaxed me into explaining why I made such a vow and I, in tears, explained my findings to her. I expected my grandma to solicit with me on the unjust death of my fowls but to my surprise, she laughed at me.
She asked me if I knew what celebration was being held or why we needed to hold this celebration. I was confused and answered in the negative. Then, she sat me down and began to explain…
Yearly celebrations are held in order to keep remembering the true meaning and purpose of a particular incident.
Grandma explained to me that the celebration we always held in our home was called Easter and the reason why we celebrate it was to keep remembering the fact that God sent His son who died for the whole wide world. How awesome!
She asked me if I could die for someone else or even myself and I nodded in the negative. Afterwards, she made me realise that it was not about my fowls that were being killed but about remembering the sacrifice someone else has made for me with His life.
We celebrate occasions yearly in order to pass it on to future generations.
She also told me that traditions and cultures did not cease even though it had been thousands of years after it was created. She expatiated that this was because each generation took it into their hands to remind and teach the coming ones. She told me that for me not to forget about God's love for me, I had to learn to remember the sacrifice of His son for me. Our yearly parties and celebrations came in handy as a method to keep refreshing our brains.
We celebrate yearly to keep the song of victory on our lips.
"Have you seen a warrior go to war, win the war and come back without a lot of fanfare?" My grandmother asked me.
"No", this was my reply to her.
Then, she smiled and said, "Likewise, these yearly celebrations are held because we remember every year that we have been made victorious."
That is why we are not complainers because instead of complaints taking over our thoughts, what bursts out of us is the song of victory!
After my grandmother explained all of these to me, I knew that indeed, I had been ignorant earlier and since then, I was always giving up my fowls to be killed every year without being forced. I learnt to enjoy eating their meats too because now, I know the true meaning and purpose of this celebration.
