Addiction is one of the problems eating deep into the fibre of society. The United Nations Office on Drugs And Crimes in June, 2021, stated that 14.4 percent of Nigerians engage in substance abuse. It is therefore not an overstatement if these sets of people are also heavily addicted to these substances.
No nation in the world can survive if the majority of its population engage in addictive practices. What are the measures that can be put in place to reduce and get rid of the incidence of addiction in our society?
1.Youth Education
The youth should be educated on the meaning, signs and disadvantages of addiction. They should be taught on how to maximize their time and how to divide duties appropriately in order not to spend excess time on irrelevant matters. The youth should also be given a chance for expression in the society through volunteer work as this will prevent them from having too much free time that might make them turn to drugs, overeating or playing games excessively.
2.Getting involved in something interesting
An idle hand is the devil's tool. Every individual must find something to do at one point or the other in order not to be a sad victim of addiction. People who find their passion in life are happier and healthier, therefore, less likely to fall into the grips of addiction.
3.Have a healthy relationship with family and friends
You must be intentional about your association. Turning to family and friends in times when one needs to come out of addictive practices have helped a lot of people overcome. Your family and friends serve as a support system for you.
Coming out of addictive practices is a gradual process, you don't have to feel bad or condemned. Take a step today, then another and you will see yourself gradually come out of it. In all you do, do not practice self-harm or self-pity, instead, care for yourself to the highest level, be the number one fan of yourself. Cheer yourself on and in a short time frame, you will notice that you have overcome!
